The Idea Behind WEmpower Pakistan
WEmpower Pakistan was established with a vision for encouraging young Pakistani women in STEM careers. The organization was built with an aim to provide a platform for professional development, networking and promoting scientific culture. Since its foundation, WEmpower has hosted numerous events focusing on professional development of researchers, organizing talks from field experts, and developing a mentorship program for young Pakistani women in STEM. WEmpower Pakistan core team values and supports this organization that believes in empowering others to promote optimism and a “can do” attitude.
WEmpower Pakistan - The Introduction
WEmpower Pakistan is an Pakistani STEM Research Company that supports, encourages and enables women to pursue education and careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). We established our organization with an aim to forward young women’s professional development. In today’s fast paced professional climate, Pakistani women need to catch up with the rest of the world. We are here to support Pakistani women in every stage of their career, whether it is choosing a profession, becoming an effective professional or flourishing in their respective fields. Through our platform, we can empower young women’s minds, nurture them to drive change and boost the development of crucial career building skills like effective communication, team building, technical and analytical abilities. Our aim is to build a strong consortium in Pakistan comprising of the public and private sector, in order to develop a professional training resource for and by young women. This will not only bridge the gap between industry and academia but would also secure the future of thousands of Pakistani women who are striving to achieve their goals.
Currently, in Pakistan we are still battling with a gender gap in literacy; 64% in women as compared with 79% in males. We also face the issue of low female representation (of 23%) in the national workforce, which is even lower when it comes to STEM professionals1. According to the UNESCO Science report it is estimated that towards 2030, women representation in Science will reach approximately 36% in Pakistan2. Since its inception in 2019, we have grown our network across Pakistan and partnered with 9 higher education institutions and businesses. We as an organization strongly felt the need to address these issues. The WEmpower platform, through our mentorship program, is working towards hosting dynamic and engaging activities that motivate women, help them realize their strengths, and encourages lasting positive change. In doing so, our trainees gain exposure from experts in their academic fields, and a wide range of industries. Professional Pakistani women from across the globe provide their valuable expertise in guiding other emerging professionals, researchers and students. “Be empowered and empower others. Our core team members have successfully organized conferences, technical workshops and professional training courses at the national. WEmpower Pakistan has several success stories of female researchers securing admissions and scholarships in international universities (Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, University of Manchester, Keele University, University of California, Davis), and of having published impactful research and dissertations. Through this dynamic platform we hope to form an interactive network of young women professionals that with our support, to flourish all over Pakistan.
